About Kanyakumari
Three seas meet on one visible horizon at the southern tip of the Indian mainland — Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal, Indian Ocean. A village of fishermen's temples, a 133-foot monolithic Thiruvalluvar statue offshore, and the only place in India where sun rises and sets over water on the same day.
History
Named after the virgin goddess Devi Kanya Kumari — an avatar of Parvati who meditated here hoping to marry Shiva (the marriage was thwarted by the gods so she might remain vigilant over India's southern tip) — Kanyakumari has been sacred since the Pandya era. Swami Vivekananda swam to the mid-sea rock in December 1892, meditated for three days, and returned with the idea of the Ramakrishna Mission — the rock memorial built in 1970 now receives 10,000 visitors a day. The 133-foot Thiruvalluvar statue beside it (completed 2000) commemorates the Tamil poet-philosopher who authored the 2,000-year-old Thirukkural; 133 feet stands for the 133 chapters of that ethics treatise.
