About Spiti Valley
Cold desert valley at 3,800 metres. Expect barren ochre mountains, 1,000-year-old Tibetan Buddhist monasteries at Tabo and Ki, and fossil-rich villages at Langza. The world's highest post office sits at Hikkim — letters are hand-stamped 4,400 m above the sea.
History
Spiti means 'the middle land' — it sits between Tibet proper and the lower Indian Himalayas and has been a Tibetan Buddhist cultural zone since the 7th century. The Tabo Monastery, founded in 996 CE by the great translator Rinchen Zangpo, is the oldest continuously operating Buddhist monastery in India and the western Himalayas — the Dalai Lama has called Tabo 'the highest-ranking monastery for merit of teaching'. The Ki Monastery, visible for 30 km across the valley on a 4,166-metre pinnacle, was founded in the 11th century and looted seven times by Mongols, Dogras and Sikhs; what survives is a textbook of Buddhist art evolution. Modern tourism only began after 1992 when the Indian government opened Spiti to foreigners, who still need an Inner Line Permit if they enter via Kinnaur.
