About Kalighat
Calcutta took its name from this temple — Kali-kshetra, anglicised. Sati's right toe is said to have fallen here, making it a Shakti Peetha and still the most-visited Kali shrine in eastern India. South Kolkata, deep in the bazaar lanes.
History
One of the 51 Shakti Peethas — Sati's right toe is said to have fallen here when Vishnu's chakra cut her body. The current temple was rebuilt in 1809 by the Sabarna Roy Choudhury family, descendants of the Brahmin priest who reportedly discovered the buried Kali idol on the bank of an old course of the Hooghly. The black stone idol — three large eyes, a long protruding gold tongue, four arms holding a sword and a severed demon's head — is unique in being entirely free-form, not anthropomorphic. The neighbourhood Kalighat (Kali's ghat) gave the city its name when the British anglicised it to Calcutta in the 17th century. The temple is also where Mother Teresa, working at the Nirmal Hriday hospice next door from 1952, encountered the dying poor of Calcutta — the hospice still operates inside the abandoned former Kali pilgrim hostel adjacent to the temple. Daily, 500 to 1,500 worshippers come; on Tuesdays and Saturdays (Kali's days) the queues can stretch to 4 hours.
