Janmashtami & Dahi Handi
Mumbai's human pyramids for Krishna
Significance
Commemorates Krishna's midnight birth in Mathura's Kamsa prison. Dahi Handi re-enacts his childhood butter-thieving pranks — the higher the pyramid, the greater the devotion.
Midnight aarti at every Krishna temple on Janmashtami, followed the next morning by Dahi Handi — Govinda troupes form 7-tier human pyramids to smash clay pots of curd hung across Mumbai's streets. Prize purses can touch ₹25 lakh per handi.
First-time visitor
Midnight at ISKCON Juhu for the janmotsav, then rooftop brunch in Thane the next morning for the pyramids.
